Ladyfingers

Maybe because Ladyfingers has been around most of my life, I forget to appreciate it.

It’s with good reason that everyone loves their blackbottom cake (and cupcakes), but have you tried their buttery breakfast pastries? Their rich cheesecakes – also available in mini-sized? Their big, chewy cookies? Today they had creamy chocolate mouse in tiny chocolate teacups! I love them and their cute strawberry sign in the window. Next time don’t just speed by on your way off 580. It’s worth stopping for.

Oaktown Spice Shop

The smell of the Oaktown Spice Shop is intoxicating. The service is warm, personal, and individualized: kind of like having a personal spice butler. There’s a lovely view of the lake from in there. Keep your eye out for the Lake Merritt Monster while your spice butler is preparing your selection of paprikas from around the globe.

The Pretty Lady

There are no tables at The Pretty Lady, just one big, horseshoe-shaped counter with the kind of wooden chairs that are attached to the floor by rotating pole. There are three pretty ladies of The Pretty Lady, but the one who will take your order, who I believe is named Sung, is funny and dry and will give you a fist bump on your way out.

I had a very good salad and a perfectly acceptable fish sandwich, but my friend and I were coveting our neighbor’s chili fries.

18th and Peralta, West Oakland. Check it out.

Occupy Love

This.

The Food Mill

The Food Mill is a true community institution with tons of bulk goods and a wide-variety of veggie “meat”. If you’ve lived here all your life, you know (and love) their cookies in the distinctive long rectangle shape. Going strong and family owned since 1933, you couldn’t get more Oakland.

El Taco Bike

El Taco Bike.

Tacos by bike. Oakland grown. There is nothing not to love about this. Follow for where to track them down.

Kwik Way!

I am back and so is Kwik Way! Risen from the grease-fire ashes of the former 99 cent burger drive in is a tastier, healthier, and shockingly still affordable Kwik Way reboot. I hear the beef is grass fed, I can tell you the veggie burger is pretty tasty, the fries are crisp, and the milk shakes are made fresh.

Welcome back!
